Sigvard Bernadotte ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp, commonly referred to as the Rotaflex model, was designed by Sigvard Bernadotte and produced by Bergboms in Sweden. The design dates from the mid-20th century and represents a fusion of Scandinavian modernism with industrial innovation, particularly in the use of synthetic materials. Bernadotte, a pioneer in bringing functionalism to Swedish design, collaborated with various manufacturers to develop modern household objects, and this lamp is a notable example of his work in lighting.
The lamp is constructed from finely grooved, translucent acrylic formed into a compressed spherical shape. The acrylic shade features an opaline white coloration with a subtle texture created by its concentric linear ridges, which enhance the diffusion of light and provide an understated decorative rhythm. The form is accentuated by polished brass elements at the top and base openings, both of which introduce warmth and contrast to the synthetic body. The lower brass ring also serves as a visual boundary, concentrating the downward cast of light while allowing ambient glow to diffuse through the shade’s surface.
Suspended by a cream-colored textile cord and a white conical ceiling canopy, the fixture preserves a minimal yet elegant silhouette. When illuminated, the lamp produces a soft, even light with distinct warm tonal transitions, demonstrating the effectiveness of the Rotaflex material in light diffusion. The design is both restrained and refined, suited for use in domestic or architectural environments that value quiet modernist expression.
Sigvard Bernadotte (1907–2002), a member of the Swedish royal family, was one of the most influential figures in Scandinavian design during the 20th century. He trained at Konstfack and worked extensively in product and industrial design, advocating for the application of functionalist principles. His partnership with companies such as Georg Jensen and Bergboms led to numerous widely recognized designs.
The lamp is in excellent condition, with minimal signs of wear and original components intact. Dimensions are approximately 30 cm in diameter (11.8 inches) and 25 cm in height (9.8 inches), with a total drop adjustable via the textile cord. This piece represents a key example of Scandinavian post-war design and mid-century lighting innovation through new materials.
