Ceiling lamp

Rare ceiling lamp produced by Konsthantverk in Tyringe, Sweden, during the 1950s. Executed in brass and opaline glass, the fixture combines restrained Scandinavian Modern geometry with unusually decorative metalwork. Konsthantverk was established in Tyringe in 1921 and has manufactured lighting in its own Swedish factory for more than a century, with metalworking and craftsmanship remaining central to its production.

The composition is organized around a circular brass frame from which three evenly spaced arms extend, creating a clear radial and triangular geometry when viewed from below. Each arm curves downward and upward in a compact U-shape before terminating in a cylindrical brass gallery. The galleries are formed by narrow vertical bars, giving them a light architectural character while visually connecting them to the open construction of the central frame.

A particularly distinctive feature is the ornamentation running around the brass ring. Delicate openwork scrolls, leaves and small floral forms repeat rhythmically around its circumference. This stylized botanical decoration introduces a softer, more traditional element into an otherwise geometrically controlled construction. The warm golden brass has developed darker brown areas, spotting and localized green oxidation, producing the varied surface characteristic of naturally aged brass.

Three matte white opaline-glass shades sit above the brass galleries. Their smooth, softly tapered forms are approximately pear- or flame-shaped, providing a deliberate contrast to the linear metalwork below. When illuminated, the opaline glass becomes a uniform warm cream and amber color, diffusing the individual light sources and producing a soft ambient light without exposing the bulbs. Brass-and-glass chandeliers are documented within Konsthantverk’s Swedish production during the 1950s and 1960s.

The fixture is suspended from three twisted light-colored textile-covered cords that converge at a tapered brass ceiling cup. This three-point suspension reinforces the triangular organization of the lamp while leaving the central area visually open. The combination of a relatively thin horizontal frame, long suspension and compact glass shades gives the lamp a notably light appearance despite its ornamental detailing.

The design belongs to the decorative side of Swedish mid-century lighting, where functional modern construction could coexist with references to earlier Scandinavian metalworking and botanical ornament. Konsthantverk’s own account emphasizes the relationship between simple, considered design, materials and hand production, and the company continues to manufacture its lighting in Tyringe.

The lamp measures 38 cm in diameter and 78 cm in total height, approximately 15.0 inches in diameter and 30.7 inches in height.

It remains in good vintage condition with small signs of use consistent with age. The brass displays natural patination, surface marks, darkening and areas of oxidation visible in the photographs, while the opaline glass retains its soft white appearance. These signs of age contribute to the contrast between the warm, time-developed brass surface and the clean white glass.
