Bjørn Wiinblad candlesticks

This pair of candlesticks, model Hurricane, was designed by the Danish artist and designer Bjørn Wiinblad. They are executed in brass with cylindrical glass shades and stand at impressive heights ranging between 55 and 64 cm, with a diameter of 10.5 cm (21.6–25.2 in high, 4.1 in in diameter). The condition is excellent, with well-preserved surfaces that display minor tonal variations and patina consistent with age.

The design is characterized by a tall, slender brass stem with rhythmically spaced nodal rings, giving the profile an organic and slightly sculptural quality. The brass holders are pierced with circular perforations and extend into crown-like prongs that hold the cylindrical glass shades in place. This combination of delicate glass and robust brass creates a striking interplay of transparency and solidity, lightness and structure. The perforated holders allow candlelight to filter through the openings, casting patterned shadows and enhancing the atmospheric effect.

Bjørn Wiinblad (1918–2006) was a Danish painter, designer, and ceramicist known for his highly decorative and whimsical style. While many of his works are characterized by vibrant ornamentation and richly patterned surfaces, his designs for lighting and candlesticks show a different approach, balancing playful detail with elegant sculptural form. Wiinblad worked extensively with various Danish manufacturers and became internationally recognized for his ability to merge fine art, applied arts, and design.

Produced in Denmark, these candlesticks reflect the mid-20th century Scandinavian tradition of craftsmanship, where functional objects were often given artistic and expressive qualities. The Hurricane model exemplifies Wiinblad’s interest in theatricality and atmosphere, transforming a simple candleholder into a commanding centerpiece. Their large scale, material contrast, and ornamental qualities make them both functional lighting elements and decorative sculptural works.
