Information

This rare sideboard, model 1608, was designed by Aksel Bender Madsen and Ejner Larsen and produced by Næstved Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. It is crafted in teak with subtle steel reinforcement, representing the refined Danish approach to furniture design that emphasized clarity of form, honest material use, and enduring functionality.

The structure features two sliding doors and four drawers arranged in a clean horizontal composition. The circular recessed handles are carefully integrated into the drawer fronts and doors, maintaining the cabinet’s smooth, uninterrupted surface. The teak veneer displays a warm, rich grain with balanced symmetry, accentuating the material’s natural depth. The sideboard rests on an elegantly constructed teak base, stabilized by horizontal stretchers with steel cross-supports that add both strength and a modern graphic element to the design.

Aksel Bender Madsen (1916–2000) and Ejner Larsen (1917–1987) were central figures in the Danish modern movement. Their collaborative work, primarily between the 1940s and 1970s, is recognized for its precision craftsmanship and quiet elegance. Working with Næstved Møbelfabrik, they produced furniture that balanced functional clarity with fine joinery and restrained detail, aligning with the ideals of Danish functionalism.

This piece remains in good vintage condition with a uniform surface and rich patina consistent with age and use. The teak retains its natural sheen and warmth, and all components function smoothly, including the sliding doors and drawers. It stands as an exemplary example of Danish mid-century cabinetmaking, harmonizing utility with architectural grace.
