Torbjørn Afdal bench

Krobo bench or side table designed by Torbjørn Afdal and produced by Mellemstrands Møbelfabrik in Norway, 1960. The piece is executed in rosewood with a rectangular top supported by two end frames. The top is long and narrow with slightly raised edges along the long sides, creating a shallow tray-like surface that helps visually contain objects. The rosewood shows a pronounced, symmetrical grain pattern with strong contrasts between deep brown and warmer reddish tones, characteristic of high-quality veneers from the period.

The base consists of two short, rectangular supports with an open frame construction, giving the bench a light appearance while maintaining good stability. The geometry is strictly linear, with carefully rounded transitions at the feet and inner corners. The overall silhouette is low and elongated, allowing the piece to function both as a bench and as a low side or coffee table. The craftsmanship is evident in the tight joinery and the precise handling of the veneer on the top and the edges.

Torbjørn Afdal was one of Norway’s leading post-war furniture designers, known for refined, understated modernism and excellent craftsmanship. His work often combines clear, architectural lines with rich natural materials. The Krobo bench is among his most recognisable designs, originally developed within the Bruksbo programme and produced by Mellemstrands Møbelfabrik, a manufacturer that played a key role in bringing Norwegian modern design to an international market during the 1950s and 1960s.

The bench is in good vintage condition with small signs of usage, consistent with age and careful domestic use. The rosewood surface shows minor marks and light wear but retains a strong colour and clear grain. The construction is stable, and the finish has been preserved to maintain the original character of the wood.
