Josef Frank cabinet
This cabinet, designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1940s, is executed in pyramid mahogany with brass fittings. The exterior surface presents a striking veneer pattern characteristic of pyramid mahogany, where the grain forms symmetrical, flame-like figures that emphasize the natural depth and variation of the wood. The color ranges from warm reddish brown to deeper, darker tonal shifts, giving the cabinet a vivid and dynamic appearance. The structure is rectilinear, with a calm and balanced silhouette elevated on straight legs and a recessed lower frame that lightens the overall proportions.
The cabinet features one drawer over the double doors, fitted with brass hardware. The handles and small brass knobs are simple yet refined, typical of Frank’s understated approach to ornamentation. The craftsmanship is visible in the precise veneer matching and the clean junctions between structural components. Inside, the cabinet is fitted with birch or similar light-toned wood, offering adjustable shelving supported by pegged holes along the interior sides. The hinges and locks are executed in brass, displaying both functionality and an attention to detail consistent with Svenskt Tenn’s production standards.
Josef Frank’s work for Svenskt Tenn is known for its combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern sensibilities. In the 1930s and 1940s, he developed furniture that blended classical materials with a softened modern aesthetic, prioritizing human scale and warmth over strict functionalism. His use of richly figured mahogany in this period reflects his belief that interiors should feel comfortable, elegant, and personal. This piece exemplifies that philosophy, with its expressive veneer, restrained geometric form, and careful material choices.
The cabinet is in good vintage condition with signs of usage and patina appropriate for its age. Minor wear, subtle surface marks, and natural aging of the finish can be expected, adding to its authenticity and historical character.
