Torbjørn Afdal Krobo bench
This side table or bench, model Krobo, was designed by Torbjørn Afdal and produced by Mellemstrands Møbelfabrik in Norway 1960. The piece is executed in rosewood, characterized by a deep brown base tone with pronounced dark veining and strong natural contrast across the surface. The rectangular top is framed by subtly raised edges along the long sides, creating a shallow tray-like profile that defines the outline while remaining visually restrained.
The construction is precise and well-balanced, with the tabletop resting on two solid end frames connected by discreet stretchers. The legs are slightly angled and joined with clean, rectilinear geometry, emphasizing structural clarity and stability. The proportions are low and elongated, allowing the piece to function equally well as a bench, low table, or side surface. The visible joinery and consistent material use reflect a high level of craftsmanship typical of Norwegian furniture production from this period.
Torbjørn Afdal was one of Norway’s most important post-war furniture designers, known for his disciplined approach to form, careful attention to proportion, and refined use of wood. His designs often bridge functionality and elegance, avoiding excess while highlighting the inherent qualities of the material. The Krobo model is representative of Afdal’s mature work, where structure and surface are closely integrated into a coherent whole.
Mellemstrands Møbelfabrik, based in western Norway, collaborated closely with Afdal during the 1950s and 1960s and was recognized for producing high-quality modern furniture with a strong emphasis on craftsmanship and material selection. Their work played a significant role in establishing Norwegian modern furniture on an international level during the mid-20th century.
The table is in excellent condition and has been professionally restored. The rosewood surfaces are clean and well-preserved, with the grain clearly articulated and the finish even throughout. There are no notable damages, and the structure is stable and intact, presenting the piece very close to its original appearance.
The dimensions are approximately 120 cm in length, 37 cm in width, and 34 cm in height, corresponding to about 47.2 inches long, 14.6 inches wide, and 13.4 inches high.
