Information

This rare set consisting of two stools and a matching low table was designed by Eero Aarnio and produced by Asko in Finland during the 1960s. Executed in woven rattan, the set represents an early and highly characteristic example of Aarnio’s interest in sculptural, organic forms combined with practical everyday function.

The stools and table share the same distinctive hourglass profile, with a gently flared base and a broad, slightly concave top surface. The woven construction is executed in a tightly structured pattern, creating a strong rhythmic texture across the surfaces. The tops are finished with a radiating weave that emphasizes the circular geometry, while the sides show a consistent vertical and horizontal interlacing that gives both strength and visual uniformity. The natural rattan has developed a warm honey-brown tone, with subtle variations typical of the material.

Eero Aarnio is internationally recognized as one of Finland’s most influential postwar designers, known for pushing industrial materials and modern production methods into new expressive territory. While he is often associated with iconic plastic designs such as the Ball Chair and Bubble Chair, his earlier and parallel work in natural materials such as rattan demonstrates the same sculptural thinking and focus on bold silhouette. These pieces reflect the wider Scandinavian design movement of the period, where craftsmanship, modern form, and material honesty were central values.

Asko was one of Finland’s most important furniture producers throughout the 20th century, collaborating with leading designers and maintaining a strong reputation for modern manufacturing combined with high-quality craftsmanship. During the mid-century era, Asko played a significant role in bringing Finnish modern design to a wider audience, producing both experimental and functional furniture that aligned with the international modernist direction.

The condition is good vintage condition, with visible wear and patina consistent with age and use. The rattan surfaces show minor variations in tone and small irregularities typical of handwoven construction. Overall the set remains structurally sound and visually well-preserved, retaining its original character and material warmth.

Dimensions: stools measure 36.5 cm in diameter and 22 cm in height (14.37 in Ø, 8.66 in height). The table measures 53.5 cm in diameter and 35 cm in height (21.06 in Ø, 13.78 in height).
