Information

Rare set of eight dining chairs, model “Utö”, designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden during the 1930s. Made in solid pine, these chairs belong to Hjorth’s celebrated Sportstugemöbler series, created for Swedish holiday homes and mountain lodges, where durability and rustic simplicity were essential.

The design is defined by its honest construction and sculptural proportions. Each chair features a thick plank seat with softly rounded edges, supported by sturdy tapered legs. The backrest is formed by three vertical slats and a gently curved top rail, giving the chairs a characteristic architectural silhouette while still maintaining a warm, handmade expression. The visible grain, knots and natural variations of the pine enhance the rustic character and highlight the craftsmanship typical of Nordiska Kompaniet’s production.

With their strong presence and compact proportions, these chairs work beautifully around a dining table but also stand well on their own as accent seating. The combination of restrained form and tactile material makes them a timeless example of Swedish functionalism interpreted through a traditional vernacular language, which is exactly what has made Axel Einar Hjorth’s pine furniture so highly sought after today.

The chairs are in good vintage condition with signs of use consistent with age. They show surface wear, small marks and variations in tone, all contributing to a rich and authentic patina. A rare opportunity to acquire a complete set of eight, offering both historical significance and strong decorative impact.

Measurements: 46 cm width, 45 cm depth, 80 cm height. Seat height 42.5 cm (18.1 x 17.7 x 31.5 inches, seat height 16.7 inches).
