Information

Rare three-drawer bureau designed by Axel Larsson and produced by Bodafors Möbelfabrik, Sweden, during the 1940s. This elegant and highly distinctive model is defined by its sculptural kidney-shaped form, a characteristic expression of Swedish modernism from the period. The softly curved front and rounded sides create a fluid silhouette, while the carefully bookmatched mahogany veneer highlights the cabinetmaker’s exceptional craftsmanship. The dramatic grain pattern across the drawer fronts forms a striking symmetrical composition, enhancing the bureau’s organic appearance.

Executed in richly figured mahogany, the piece is elevated on tapered legs and fitted with original brass handles that provide a refined contrast to the warm tone of the wood. The curved drawer fronts echo the shape of the top, creating a harmonious and balanced design from every angle. Thanks to its fully finished back, the bureau can be placed freestanding, making it equally suitable as a statement piece in the centre of a room as against a wall.

Axel Larsson was among Sweden’s most influential designers of the mid-20th century, renowned for combining elegant forms with practical functionality. His work for Bodafors is particularly celebrated for its sophisticated proportions and exceptional material quality. This bureau represents a rare and sought-after example of Larsson’s work, reflecting the transition from Swedish Grace to the softer, more organic forms of Scandinavian modernism.

The bureau remains in good vintage condition with signs of age, use and patina consistent with its history. The mahogany surfaces have developed a rich depth and character over time, further enhancing the visual appeal of the piece.
