Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
A very rare Model 9040 ceiling lamp designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1940s. Originally commissioned for Alava Hospital in Kuopio, this exceptional fixture exemplifies Tynell’s celebrated ability to combine refined craftsmanship with poetic ornamentation. Highly sought after by collectors, Model 9040 is one of the designer’s most elegant architectural lighting designs from the golden age of Finnish modernism.
The lamp is crafted from beautifully aged brass with Tynell’s signature hand-finished details. Its tapered cylindrical body is adorned with delicate pierced brass rosettes, creating a subtle decorative rhythm while softly filtering light upward toward the ceiling. Suspended beneath is a large, shallow bowl-shaped shade in opaline glass, which diffuses the light evenly and produces a warm, inviting glow. The contrast between the softly illuminated glass and the rich patinated brass gives the fixture a remarkable sculptural presence, whether lit or unlit.
Paavo Tynell is widely regarded as one of the most important lighting designers of the twentieth century. His work for Taito Oy helped define Scandinavian lighting design, blending modernist simplicity with exceptional craftsmanship and delicate natural motifs. Originally created for prestigious public interiors, lamps such as this rarely appear on the market, making surviving examples especially desirable.
This example has an outstanding provenance, having originated from Alava Hospital in Kuopio, Finland, an important modernist building where Tynell supplied custom lighting as part of the architectural interior.
The lamp measures 40 cm in diameter and 53 cm in height (approximately 15.7 × 20.9 inches).
It remains in good vintage condition, displaying attractive age-related wear and a beautiful, untouched patina to the brass that enhances its authenticity and character. A rare museum-quality lighting piece and an exceptional opportunity to acquire one of Paavo Tynell’s iconic post-war designs.
