Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
Exceptionally rare commissioned ceiling lamp designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s. Executed in brass with its original large opaline glass diffuser, the lamp is a particularly refined example of Tynell’s ability to combine functional illumination with delicate, almost jewelry-like metalwork.
The composition is dominated by a broad, shallow bowl of softly tinted opaline glass measuring approximately 50 cm in diameter. Suspended from a long, slender brass stem, the generous diffuser gives the lamp a remarkably light appearance despite its substantial scale. When illuminated, the glass transforms into a warm, even field of amber-toned light, emphasizing the gentle curvature of the bowl.
Beneath the glass sits an irregularly contoured brass plate perforated with numerous small holes arranged in radiating patterns. This characteristic treatment of pierced brass is closely associated with Tynell’s lighting designs, allowing points of light to pass through the metal while adding a subtle decorative quality to an otherwise restrained construction.
The most distinctive feature is the sculptural brass finial suspended beneath the perforated plate. Formed from a series of looping brass wires gathered around a tapered central element, it recalls a flower, bow or abstract botanical form. Viewed directly from below, the loops form a starburst-like composition at the center of the shade. This combination of perforation, fine wirework and organic imagery is characteristic of Tynell’s poetic approach to metal.
The restrained upper construction provides an effective counterpoint. A simple brass rod rises to a hemispherical ceiling canopy, leaving the elaborate lower details and expansive glass shade as the visual focus. The brass has developed a rich, varied patina, giving the surface considerable depth and preserving the character of the original material.
Paavo Tynell was among the most significant Finnish lighting designers of the twentieth century and a co-founder of Taito Oy, established in Helsinki in 1918. His work became particularly celebrated during the post-war period for its sophisticated manipulation of light and its distinctive combination of industrial construction with handcrafted decorative details. Commissioned pieces occupy a particularly interesting position within his oeuvre, often adapting his characteristic vocabulary to individual architectural interiors.
The lamp remains in good vintage condition with small signs of use and age. The original glass is preserved and shows minor nicks along the rim. The brass components display oxidation, surface wear and a naturally developed patina. Cracks are present in the brass ceiling canopy and should be noted as part of the condition.
Approximately 50 cm (19.7 in) in diameter and 70 cm (27.6 in) in total height.
