Karl Hagenauer ashtray

Ashtray designed by Karl Hagenauer and produced by Werkstätte Hagenauer in Vienna, Austria, during the 1950s. Executed in bronze and brass, the piece combines a dark patinated exterior with a contrasting warm golden brass insert. Its compact, almost square body has softly rounded corners and slightly tapering sides, while the upper edge follows a shallow concave curve.

The interior is constructed as a series of six parallel brass ribs, creating elongated openings across the top. The ribs follow the curvature of the body and form a regular architectural grid, providing multiple rests for cigarettes while allowing ash to fall into the recessed container below. The contrast between the dark, visually solid outer casing and the repeated brass elements gives the object a distinctly graphic quality. The restrained geometry and emphasis on functional construction are characteristic of Austrian postwar modernism and Hagenauer’s approach to small domestic objects. Comparable Hagenauer ashtrays in patinated and polished brass are documented from approximately 1945–1955 and throughout the 1950s.

Karl Hagenauer (1898–1956) was an Austrian designer, craftsman and trained architect. He studied at Vienna’s School of Applied Arts under Josef Hoffmann and Oskar Strnad and subsequently produced designs for the Wiener Werkstätte. He joined his father’s workshop in 1919 and became increasingly responsible for its designs, production and management. His work incorporated materials including brass, copper, silver, enamel, stone and wood and developed from the influence of the Wiener Werkstätte and Art Deco toward a more reduced modernist vocabulary in the postwar period. Hagenauer remained director of the family workshop until his death in 1956.

Werkstätte Hagenauer was founded in Vienna by Karl’s father, Carl Hagenauer, in 1898. Originally associated with traditional Viennese decorative metalwork, the workshop underwent a substantial stylistic transformation under Karl Hagenauer. Josef Hoffmann, the Wiener Werkstätte and Viennese Jugendstil and Art Deco provided important points of reference, while the company developed its own extensive production of both decorative and functional objects. Ashtrays, lamps, trays, bookends, candlesticks and other household accessories formed an important part of this output.

The underside bears the Werkstätte Hagenauer manufacturer’s marks. The object remains in good vintage condition. The dark patinated surfaces display scratches, rubbing, small marks and areas of surface wear, particularly along the edges and corners, where the underlying warmer metal becomes visible. The brass ribs retain an aged golden tone with minor spotting, oxidation and surface wear. These variations are consistent with age and regular use and contribute to the established patina rather than presenting as a uniform restored finish.
