Information

A rare sculptural oak table designed and produced by Danish cabinetmaker Frits Henningsen during the 1940s. The table is distinguished by its elaborate carved detailing, organically curved legs, and richly figured oak surfaces. Its rectangular proportions are softened by a continuous scalloped apron and an irregularly contoured tabletop, creating a distinctive composition that combines traditional cabinetmaking techniques with the expressive qualities of Danish furniture design.

The table is constructed in oak with a warm reddish-brown finish that accentuates the natural grain of the wood. The tabletop displays pronounced cathedral-like grain formations, flowing annual rings, and darker figuring that create considerable variation across the surface. Its perimeter follows a rhythmic sequence of rounded projections and subtle angular transitions, corresponding to the carved apron beneath. The apron consists of repeated concave and convex profiles, forming a continuous decorative band around all four sides of the table.

The four solid oak legs are individually shaped with elongated, asymmetrical curves, gradually tapering toward small, outward-sweeping feet. At the upper corners, the legs meet the tabletop through rounded, projecting shoulders that provide a sculptural transition between the vertical supports and the horizontal structure. The combination of carefully carved surfaces, pronounced grain patterns, and fluid contours reflects the importance of material selection and craftsmanship in Henningsen’s furniture.

Frits Henningsen (1889–1965) was a Danish furniture designer and master cabinetmaker known for his uncompromising approach to craftsmanship, proportions, and material quality. Trained in the Danish cabinetmaking tradition, he established his own workshop in Copenhagen in 1915. Henningsen developed furniture characterized by precise construction, carefully considered proportions, and an individual interpretation of historical furniture forms. His designs frequently incorporated references to earlier European furniture traditions while maintaining the functional principles associated with Danish modernism.

Unlike many of his contemporaries, Henningsen maintained direct control over both the design and production of his furniture. His Copenhagen workshop specialized in individually crafted pieces and limited production, with considerable attention devoted to wood selection, joinery, and surface finishing. During the 1930s and 1940s, his work became increasingly refined, combining traditional cabinetmaking with more restrained modern design principles. This table represents the more decorative and sculptural side of his production, with its shaped apron and cabriole-inspired legs reflecting historical influences interpreted through a twentieth-century Danish design vocabulary.

The table remains in good vintage condition, with minor signs of use consistent with its age. The oak retains its warm coloration and visible grain structure, with small surface marks and subtle variations in the finish. The carved details and sculptural profiles remain clearly defined.
