Yasha Heifetz table lamp
The lamp is constructed around a slender vertical brass stem rising from a distinctive three-legged base. The base consists of three flat, rectangular brass supports extending outward from a central connecting element, creating a stable yet visually light structure. Their clean geometric lines contrast with the rounded form of the stem and the soft contours of the shade. The brass has developed a warm, naturally aged patina, with subtle variations in tone and surface texture that emphasize the lamp’s vintage character.
A particularly interesting feature of the B-31 is its pivoting shade mechanism. The shade is mounted on a cylindrical brass fitting incorporating a small adjustment control, allowing it to tilt away from its horizontal position. This functional detail gives the lamp a versatile character, making it possible to direct the light according to different needs while also changing its overall silhouette. When positioned horizontally, the lamp has a calm, symmetrical appearance, while the tilted shade introduces a more dynamic and sculptural expression.
The original lampshade is made from a light-colored, textured fabric with a gently tapered cylindrical profile. Its broad diameter provides a pleasing visual balance to the slender brass structure, while the woven material diffuses the light into a soft, warm glow. When illuminated, the fabric’s natural texture becomes particularly pronounced, creating a subtle interplay of light and shadow across its surface. An internal circular diffuser helps soften the light and contributes to the lamp’s comfortable, atmospheric illumination.
Yasha Heifetz was a designer whose work explored the relationship between sculptural form, practical function, and modern materials. The B-31 demonstrates this approach through its minimal construction and carefully integrated adjustable shade. Rather than relying on decorative ornamentation, the design achieves its distinctive character through proportion, material contrast, and the clarity of its individual components.
Bergboms, established in Malmö, Sweden, became an important producer of Scandinavian lighting during the mid-20th century. The company was known for its well-crafted lamps, frequently combining brass, metal, glass, and textile elements in designs that balanced modern aesthetics with practical functionality. Its production from the 1950s and 1960s remains appreciated for its refined detailing, quality materials, and timeless forms.
The surface shows minor signs of age and use, including natural oxidation and small marks consistent with its period. The original shade exhibits subtle discoloration and traces of wear, contributing to its authentic appearance. The brass structure and adjustable mechanism remain visually well preserved.
The lamp is in good vintage condition, with minor signs of use and a naturally developed patina.
The lamp measures 39 cm (15.4 in) in diameter and 61 cm (24 in) in height.
