Aage Herløw chandeliers
The chandelier features an elaborate three-tiered construction, formed by circular brass frameworks of varying diameters arranged around a central vertical axis. Each tier consists of gracefully curved tubular brass arms extending outward and downward, terminating in cylindrical brass lamp holders with exposed light bulbs. The repetition of these elements creates a rhythmic, almost crown-like silhouette, giving the chandelier a distinctive architectural presence.
The composition is carefully balanced, with the smaller upper and lower tiers framing the wider central section. The curved arms introduce a sense of movement and lightness, contrasting with the strong vertical lines of the supporting structure. Despite its intricate construction and numerous light sources, the design maintains a remarkable visual clarity, reflecting the Scandinavian modernist emphasis on proportion, functionality, and material expression.
Crafted entirely from brass, the chandelier displays a beautiful, naturally developed patina, with warm golden tones and darker areas of oxidation across its surfaces. These variations emphasize the craftsmanship and age of the piece, giving the metal a rich, textured character. The visible connections between the curved arms and circular frameworks further reveal the carefully considered construction.
When illuminated, the numerous exposed bulbs create a warm and atmospheric glow, transforming the chandelier into a luminous sculptural centerpiece. The light reflects across the polished and patinated brass surfaces, accentuating the layered construction and producing a captivating interplay of highlights and shadows. The open design allows light to spread freely in all directions, making the fixture particularly suitable for large architectural interiors.
The chandelier’s provenance from St. John’s Church in Herning, Denmark, adds an important historical dimension to the piece. Its monumental yet restrained design reflects the relationship between modern Scandinavian lighting and ecclesiastical architecture during the mid-20th century, when traditional craftsmanship was increasingly combined with contemporary forms and materials.
Aage Herløw’s design demonstrates a distinctive approach to decorative lighting, in which repetition, geometry, and carefully articulated metalwork are brought together to create a composition of considerable visual complexity. The chandelier’s sculptural character allows it to function both as a source of illumination and as an independent architectural statement.
The chandelier is preserved in good vintage condition, showing signs of age and use consistent with its history. The brass retains a beautiful natural patina, with areas of oxidation and surface wear that contribute to its authentic vintage character.
The chandelier measures 65 cm (25.6 in) in diameter and 75 cm (29.5 in) in height. The overall suspended height, including the ceiling rod, is 350 cm (137.8 in).
