Josef Frank candlestick
This rare candlestick was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1950s. Crafted in brass, the piece features a central vertical shaft from which two tiers of scrolling arms extend horizontally in opposite directions. Each arm ends in a candle holder with a shallow drip plate, totaling nine lights. The structure is supported by a tripod base with outwardly flaring legs, echoing the curves of the upper elements and providing both stability and formal balance.
The brass surface retains a warm golden tone with a naturally aged patina, showing signs of oxidation, superficial scratches, and localized darkening, particularly along the central stem and mounting areas. Adjustable collars securing the arms highlight the modularity and precision typical of Frank’s designs.
Josef Frank (1885–1967), an Austrian-born architect and designer, became a central figure in Swedish modernism after joining Svenskt Tenn in the 1930s. Renowned for vibrant textiles and furniture blending functionalist and expressive styles, Frank also created refined brass objects. His brass work often bridges early modernist ideas with classical references and organic lines; this candlestick exemplifies that synthesis.
Svenskt Tenn, founded in 1924 by Estrid Ericson, was the primary platform for Frank’s work in Sweden and remains closely associated with his legacy. The firm’s mid-century output emphasized craftsmanship and a design philosophy that valued beauty alongside utility.
This candlestick illustrates Scandinavian mid-century design’s ability to unite ornamental elegance with structural clarity. Its modular construction and graceful proportions allow it to serve as both a lighting fixture and a sculptural centerpiece.
The candlestick measures 36 centimeters in diameter and 34 centimeters in height (approximately 14.2 by 13.4 inches).
