Pewter box
This pewter box, produced in 1931 by Ystad Tenn in Sweden, is a finely crafted decorative object that exemplifies the Art Deco and Swedish Grace influences present in Scandinavian metalwork of the early 20th century. Combining clean geometry with elegant ornamentation, the box strikes a balance between functional craftsmanship and decorative sophistication.
The form is rectangular with a domed lid that softens the linearity of the base, contributing to a harmonious and composed silhouette. The surface of the pewter has developed a soft, silver-grey patina over time, lending the piece an understated, matte finish with subtle tonal variations. This natural aging adds character while highlighting the relief work and contouring of the decorative elements.
The front panel and the lid feature raised leaf-like motifs rendered in a stylized, symmetrical arrangement—typical of the period’s decorative vocabulary. These motifs suggest organic inspiration, yet remain geometrically controlled, a visual hallmark of the transitional phase between Art Nouveau’s fluidity and Art Deco’s precision. The base is edged with a repeating border, further framing the box and enhancing its sense of crafted refinement.
The hinged lid opens to reveal a wooden interior, richly toned in a reddish-brown hue, likely mahogany or another hardwood with a similar grain. The warm wood provides a visual and tactile contrast to the cool tone of the pewter, and reflects the tradition of lining metal boxes with fine timber to protect contents and elevate the sense of luxury. The craftsmanship extends to the interior, where the wood is smoothly finished and closely fitted to the pewter shell.
Produced by Ystad Tenn, one of Sweden’s most esteemed metalwork manufacturers of the early 20th century, the box is marked on the underside with the firm’s logo and the model number “E8” confirming its authenticity. Ystad Tenn was known for its dedication to artisanal techniques and high-quality materials, often collaborating with notable designers to produce decorative and utilitarian objects in pewter.
The condition of the box is good, with expected signs of wear for a piece of this age. These include minor surface scratches, slight discoloration in areas, and gentle patina development—all of which contribute to the object’s vintage charm and confirm its age and use.
The dimensions are 14 cm in height, 14 cm in depth, and 19.5 cm in width, corresponding to approximately 5.5 inches high, 5.5 inches deep, and 7.7 inches wide. This pewter box serves not only as a functional storage piece but also as a decorative artifact from a distinctive period in Swedish design history.
