Jacob Kjær bureau

This rare bureau was designed by Jacob Kjær and produced by Christensen & Larsen Møbelhåndværk in Denmark in 1978. Executed in richly grained rosewood with brass fittings, the piece reflects the continuation of Danish cabinetmaking traditions into the late modern period, combining fine craftsmanship with understated form.

The bureau is composed of a rectangular carcass raised on slender legs, with three drawers framed by subtly profiled edges. The rosewood veneer displays deep brown and amber hues with a pronounced linear grain pattern that wraps around the structure, emphasizing the natural rhythm of the material. Each drawer is fitted with finely cast brass handles in a classic loop form, their darkened patina complementing the warmth of the wood. The interior construction, in light beech, reveals precise dovetail joinery and careful finishing throughout.

Jacob Kjær (1896–1957) was a central figure in Danish furniture design, known for his meticulous craftsmanship and balanced aesthetic that bridged neoclassical influences and modern simplicity. Although this example was produced posthumously, Christensen & Larsen—established cabinetmakers based in Rødovre—were known for continuing such masterful traditions into the latter decades of the 20th century, maintaining the same devotion to material integrity and artisanal construction.

The bureau remains in good vintage condition with small signs of use, a warm, even surface patina, and fully functional drawers.
