Information

This is a rare and early set of six dining chairs designed in 1937 by Swedish architect and designer Erik Chambert and produced by AB Chamberts Möbelfabrik in Norrköping, Sweden.

The chairs are constructed in solid mahogany with hand-woven cane seats, combining Scandinavian neoclassicism with the emerging principles of functionalism that characterized late 1930s Nordic design. Each chair has a pared-down, rectilinear silhouette with lightly curved backrest rails and subtly tapered rear legs that lend a quiet elegance to the otherwise strict geometric form. The mahogany frames have a warm, medium-brown tone with visible natural figuring and a satin finish that reveals the quality of the wood grain. The cane seats are woven in a traditional hexagonal pattern, providing both lightness and ventilation. The craftsmanship is evident in the joinery and proportions, balancing decorative restraint with architectural clarity.

Erik Chambert was a key figure in the transition from Swedish Grace to modernist design in Sweden. Trained as both an architect and furniture designer, his work often merged a sensitivity to material with formal discipline. At AB Chamberts Möbelfabrik, the family-owned firm where he was active throughout the 1930s and 40s, Chambert developed high-quality bespoke and limited-production furniture for both public and private interiors. These chairs date from an important period in Chambert’s output, where neoclassical influences were being gradually distilled into more rational forms. While still reflective of pre-war decorative traditions, the design anticipates the modern Scandinavian idiom that would come to dominate postwar interiors.

The set is in good vintage condition with signs of age and use, including minor wear to the cane consistent with its age and light structural surface marks on the wood. The cane seats remain functional, although some may show minor localized damage. The frames are stable and retain their original finish.

Each chair measures 47 cm in width, 48 cm in depth, and 80 cm in height, with a seat height of 41 cm (18.5 x 18.9 x 31.5 inches, seat height 16.1 inches).
