Information

This sofa and daybed combination, model Minerva, was designed in the 1950s by Danish architects Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and produced by France & Daverkosen in Denmark. The model exemplifies the designers’ modernist approach to functional furniture that combines lightness, simplicity, and modular construction. The Minerva series was among the early pieces that defined the transition of Danish furniture design into a more flexible and industrially viable modern style.

The frame is constructed from solid teak with precise joinery and finely sculpted edges, showing the designers’ mastery of wood craftsmanship. The exposed teak structure supports a newly reupholstered seat and backrest in deep blue fabric with white button tufting, providing a striking contrast in color and texture. The combination of warm wood and vibrant textile reflects the refined aesthetic balance typical of Danish modern design. The backrest and armrests are held by visible metal fittings, giving the piece a structural rhythm while emphasizing its functional logic.

The sofa is in good vintage condition with light signs of age and use. The teak retains an even tone with minor surface wear, and the new upholstery highlights the clean geometric form of the design. The piece is both sculptural and practical, suitable for use as a compact sofa or daybed.

Dimensions: 135 cm wide, 80 cm deep, 80 cm high, with a seat height of 42 cm (53.1 x 31.5 x 31.5 in, seat height 16.5 in).
