Information

This sofa and daybed, model GE-258, was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Getama in Denmark during the 1950s. Constructed from solid teak with woven cane back panels, it retains its original blue wool fabric seat cushion. The piece reflects the understated elegance and functionality central to Scandinavian modernism and Danish design.

The frame is crafted from warm, medium reddish-brown teak, displaying a straight grain typical of mid-century material choices. The backrest consists of three woven cane panels, each encased in solid teak and arranged to create a balanced rhythm of texture and structure. The cane is finely woven and well preserved, with no signs of fraying or discoloration, lending the piece a light visual quality while maintaining tactile richness.

The seat cushion is upholstered in the original blue wool textile, presenting a subdued denim-blue tone that complements the golden cane and teak frame. The upholstery is tightly fitted and in good condition, showing only minor wear without visible repairs. The seat offers a deep and firm surface, designed for comfortable seating as well as use as a daybed.

Hans Wegner conceived the GE-258 with an emphasis on multipurpose functionality and visual clarity. The exposed teak frame reveals precise joinery and harmonious proportions. Discreetly recessed brass or stainless steel screws along the side panels provide subtle industrial accents without detracting from the warmth of the natural wood.

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was a prolific Danish designer renowned for his dedication to craftsmanship, ergonomic design, and timeless aesthetics. His partnership with Getama, a manufacturer based in Gedsted, Denmark, produced many enduring furniture designs, particularly sofas and lounge pieces that combine formal clarity with domestic comfort.

The piece measures 198 cm in width, 90 cm in depth, and 72.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 42 cm. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 77.9 inches wide, 35.4 inches deep, 28.5 inches high, and a seat height of 16.5 inches. These dimensions make the sofa suitable for compact interiors while retaining a strong architectural presence.
