Information

This very rare Konkret mirror, attributed to Yngve Ekström and produced by Eden Spegel in Sweden, stands as a striking example of Scandinavian mid-century design with a distinctly graphic and architectural expression. The mirror merges decorative and functional elements in a way that is emblematic of Ekström’s work—balancing structural precision with visual subtlety.

The frame is constructed from wood and finished in a matte black tone. Its most notable feature is the geometric open-cut design, consisting of angular, irregular segments that form a fragmented, web-like structure. This pattern introduces a sense of tension and movement, offering a sculptural quality that elevates the mirror from a purely utilitarian object to a wall-mounted artwork. The negative space within the frame gives the piece a sense of depth and lightness, despite its solid material.

At the center sits a rectangular mirror pane, bordered by a narrow golden trim that acts as a quiet but effective visual counterpoint to the stark black of the frame. This gold border adds warmth and a subtle note of sophistication, drawing the eye inward while reinforcing the mirror’s vintage charm.

Signs of age are present on the mirror’s reflective surface, including areas of mild speckling, patina, and oxidation that are typical of older glass. Most notably, there is a delicate circular pattern of deterioration in the silver backing layer, which contributes to its character and authenticity. These imperfections, rather than detracting, enhance the mirror’s historic value and visual interest, emphasizing its provenance as a well-aged mid-century piece.

The attribution to Yngve Ekström (1913–1988) is consistent with the mirror’s bold form language and material economy. Ekström—best known for designs such as the Lamino chair—was a central figure in Swedish modern design and often incorporated expressive, geometric motifs into his lesser-known works in metal, wood, and glass. Eden Spegel, active during the mid-20th century, was known for producing distinctive mirrors that combined traditional craftsmanship with modern styling, making them a natural partner for Ekström’s aesthetic.

The mirror remains in good vintage condition. The frame is structurally sound and retains its original matte black finish. The aged mirror glass, with its patinated surface and imperfections, offers a testament to the passage of time and adds to the overall authenticity of the piece.

The dimensions are 56 cm in width, 2.5 cm in depth, and 82.5 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 22 inches wide, 1 inch deep, and 32.5 inches high.
