Axel Einar Hjorth mirror
This rectangular wall mirror, model “Cecil” was designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Svenska Möbelfabrikerna (SMF) in Bodafors, Sweden, during the 1930s. The frame is crafted from solid beech wood, stained in a deep brown tone that highlights the vertical grain and imparts warmth to the geometric silhouette. The design features a restrained rectilinear profile with clean mitred joints, accentuated by a carved decorative crest mounted centrally on the upper edge. This applied ornament displays a stylized fan motif flanked by curving ribbon-like forms, reflecting both classical influences and the Swedish Grace style characteristic of Hjorth’s work from this period.
Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959) was a prominent Swedish designer and former head designer at Nordiska Kompaniet. His work from the 1920s through the 1940s blended functionalist ideals with decorative neoclassical and vernacular motifs, seen throughout his furniture for both residential and institutional settings. The “Cecil” mirror embodies this balance of austerity and sculptural detail.
Produced by SMF Bodafors, a key Swedish furniture manufacturer noted for collaborations with leading designers, the mirror bears factory marks on its reverse, including an ink-stamped SMF logo and handwritten production numbers.
The mirror is in good condition with minor wear to the wood finish consistent with age. The original mirror glass remains clear and free of blemishes.
Dimensions are 40 cm wide, 4 cm deep, and 98 cm high, approximately 15.7 x 1.6 x 38.6 inches.
