Hans-Agne Jakobsson table lamp
The very rare table lamp model B-99, designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced in the 1960s by his own company in Markaryd, Sweden, is a sculptural and atmospheric example of Scandinavian mid-century lighting design. Jakobsson was renowned for his exploration of indirect and diffused lighting, and this lamp exemplifies his sensitivity to how form and structure influence the character of illumination.
The lamp features a striking cylindrical shade composed of a series of horizontally stacked white lacquered metal rings. These rings are spaced evenly apart, allowing light to pass through the gaps in a controlled and decorative manner. The result is a layered, glowing effect that softens the light source and creates a rhythm of light and shadow—an approach typical of Jakobsson’s work, which often focused on creating ambient, glare-free illumination.
The base and central stem are finished in matte black lacquered metal, offering a visual and textural contrast to the clean, white upper section. This two-tone composition enhances the lamp’s modernist aesthetic while maintaining a minimalist restraint. The interplay between the monochrome elements and the cylindrical form lends the piece a distinctly architectural quality, making it as much a sculptural object as a functional lamp.
The condition is good vintage, with minor signs of age-related wear such as small surface marks or slight paint inconsistencies, none of which detract from the lamp’s visual impact or structural integrity. The lacquer finish on both the black and white elements remains intact, and the lamp functions as intended.
Measuring 20 cm in diameter and 42 cm in height (7.9 x 16.5 inches), the B-99 is compact yet visually impactful—ideal for side tables, desks, or credenzas where soft ambient lighting and sculptural presence are desired.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was one of Sweden’s most influential lighting designers, celebrated for his innovative work with form, material, and light diffusion. The B-99 model is a rare and highly collectible example of his design ethos, reflecting his mastery of both visual subtlety and functional effectiveness in lighting.
