Sofa
This three-seat sofa was produced in Denmark during the 1950s by an unknown designer associated with the Scandinavian modern movement. The sofa’s frame is constructed from wood and supported by slightly splayed cylindrical steel legs, which are chrome-plated and subtly tapered toward the base. The overall form presents a low profile, featuring straight armrests and a gently inclined backrest. This creates a linear, restrained architectural expression characteristic of Danish mid-century design principles.
The upholstery is original black patinated leather with a dark brown tone, now displaying a well-developed surface character shaped by age and use. The leather exhibits visible wear, scuffs, and color variations ranging from deep near-black areas to warmer amber and chestnut hues. The three removable seat cushions show pronounced creasing and surface distress, particularly on the central cushion, consistent with authentic use over time. Natural aging is evident in the leather’s oxidation and creasing, especially along the armrests and seat edges where wear is most concentrated.
Although the designer remains unidentified, the sofa’s form and construction methods suggest influences from contemporaries such as Illum Wikkelsø or Arne Vodder. The minimalist and functionalist aesthetic shares affinities with their work. The Danish production reflects the high standards of post-war furniture manufacturing in Denmark, visible in the tight upholstery and precise wooden joinery of the sofa’s substructure.
Stylistically, the sofa aligns with the Scandinavian mid-century idiom, emphasizing utility, simplicity, and the use of tactile materials. Its rectilinear silhouette and exposed legs represent a modernist reduction of form, while the aged leather upholstery introduces a contrasting organic warmth and softness to the otherwise clean geometry. The sofa measures 195 centimeters in width, 75 centimeters in depth, and 72 centimeters in height, with a seat height of 40 centimeters (approximately 76.8 by 29.5 by 28.3 inches, seat height 15.7 inches).
