Information

This rare three-seater sofa was designed by Danish designer Poul Cadovius and produced by France & Son in Denmark during the 1960s. It exemplifies the refined balance of form and function that characterizes the best of Danish modern furniture. The sofa combines a striking rosewood frame with its original bouclé fabric upholstery, creating an engaging contrast between richly patterned wood and soft, textured fabric.

The sofa has a linear silhouette with a low, deep seat and an open architectural quality. The frame is constructed from solid rosewood, known for its dramatic grain and warm reddish-brown hues. The sides and back panels feature a woven rosewood veneer pattern, lending a sense of depth and craftsmanship to the design. The angular solid wood legs are joined to a horizontal stretcher, providing both stability and a visually grounding element.

The cushions are upholstered in the original beige bouclé fabric, which has a highly tactile surface with a subtle interplay of tone and texture. The cushions exhibit natural signs of gentle use and patina appropriate for their age but remain in good condition without structural flaws. The seat and back cushions are fully removable, consistent with the modular and functional ethos of Cadovius’s designs.

Poul Cadovius (1911–2011) was an innovative Danish designer and entrepreneur, best known for his pioneering Royal System shelving units. His furniture designs often reflect a modernist approach rooted in clean geometry and a sophisticated use of materials. France & Son, founded by Charles France and Eric Daverkosen, became one of Denmark’s most significant furniture producers of the mid-century period, collaborating with leading designers to bring Danish design to an international audience.

The sofa measures 200 cm in width, 80 cm in depth, and 73 cm in height. The seat height is 41 cm. In inches, this corresponds approximately to 78.7 inches wide, 31.5 inches deep, and 28.7 inches high, with a seat height of 16.1 inches.
