Carl-Harry Stålhane vase

This rare ceramic vase, designed by Carl-Harry Stålhane and produced by Rörstrand in Sweden during the 1960s, exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian ceramics through its organic, sculptural form. The vase is defined by two elegantly curved sections that rise upward to form a dynamic, V-shaped opening. This fluid and asymmetric silhouette reflects Stålhane’s modernist approach, where expressive yet balanced forms were a hallmark of Scandinavian design.

Carl-Harry Stålhane (1920–1990) was a prominent figure in Swedish ceramics, celebrated for his refined stoneware and innovative glaze techniques. His tenure at Rörstrand, beginning in the 1940s, marked him as one of the company’s most influential designers. His work is distinguished by the synthesis of simplicity and sculptural expressiveness, significantly shaping mid-century Scandinavian ceramic design.

Rörstrand, established in 1726, is one of Sweden’s foremost porcelain manufacturers. By the mid-20th century, it had become synonymous with modern ceramic artistry, balancing function and aesthetic innovation. Collaborations with designers like Stålhane reinforced its reputation for quality craftsmanship and creative exploration.

This vase is a fine example of mid-century Scandinavian design, combining organic form with nuanced glaze work. It is in well-preserved condition, free of visible cracks or significant wear. The dimensions measure approximately 19.5 centimeters in width, 11 centimeters in depth, and 21.5 centimeters in height, or 7.7 by 4.3 by 8.5 inches, presenting an elegant and distinctive profile.
