Information

This is a rare pair of easy chairs with matching stools, model Modus, designed by Danish architect and designer Kristian Solmer Vedel in 1963 and produced by Søren Willadsens Møbelfabrik in Denmark. The seating units are constructed from solid rosewood frames with upholstered cushions in black leather. The overall design emphasizes structural clarity, generous proportions, and high material quality characteristic of Danish modernist principles.

The chairs are composed of vertical cylindrical posts joined by horizontal stretchers, forming an open box-like frame that supports loose leather cushions for the seat, back, and arms. The armrests are soft slings, suspended and sewn into cylindrical leather collars that wrap around the upper frame ends. The back and seat cushions are tufted, lending dimensionality to the otherwise streamlined geometry. The rosewood exhibits rich brown tones with variegated, expressive grain, and is finished to a smooth, lustrous surface. The accompanying stools mirror the form of the chairs’ lower frame and serve as footrests or secondary seating.

Kristian Solmer Vedel was a leading voice of Danish functionalism during the mid-twentieth century, known for furniture that blends rational structure with human-centered comfort. The Modus series is among his most recognized works, particularly for its modular system that allows the components to be arranged flexibly within interior environments. Søren Willadsens Møbelfabrik was instrumental in realizing Vedel’s designs, producing high-quality editions in fine materials during the golden age of Danish furniture manufacturing.

These pieces are in good vintage condition, with small signs of usage including light creasing on the leather and minor wear to the wooden frame, consistent with careful use and age.

Each chair measures 71 cm in width, 61 cm in depth, and 77 cm in height, with a seat height of 37 cm. These measurements translate to approximately 28 inches wide, 24 inches deep, and 30.3 inches high, with a seat height of 14.6 inches. The stools match in width and are slightly lower in height to provide ergonomic support when used as ottomans. This ensemble reflects the restrained luxury and structural elegance of Danish modern design in the early 1960s.
