Information

This very rare console table or sideboard was designed by Swedish architect and designer David Rosén and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Sweden during the 1950s. It exemplifies the refined elegance and expert craftsmanship typical of postwar Scandinavian modernism, especially within the Swedish decorative arts tradition, where NK was a key institution.

The console is crafted from a warm combination of teak and stained beech, creating a subtle tonal contrast between the tabletop and its supporting structure. The tabletop features raised edges on three sides, forming a low gallery that provides both functional containment and a graceful sculptural contour. The softly rounded corners highlight the artisanal joinery and add a tactile softness to the piece’s otherwise rectilinear geometry.

Below the tabletop are three integrated drawers, each adorned with brass loop handles that have an organic, fluid form characteristic of Rosén’s decorative style. The teak drawer fronts are framed by the beech support structure, which extends down into square, tapered legs connected by a stretcher base for additional stability. The legs and stretchers exhibit carefully considered shaping and proportions, reflecting Rosén’s architectural training.

Measuring 140 cm wide, 38 cm deep, and 70.5 cm high (55.1 x 15 x 27.8 inches), this piece is versatile enough to function as a console in an entryway, a serving table in a dining room, or a sophisticated sideboard in a modern interior. It is in excellent vintage condition, showing only minor signs of age-related wear such as light surface marks and some patina on the brass pulls.

David Rosén (1898–1986) was an influential figure in Swedish design, particularly through his affiliation with NK, where he contributed to architectural interiors and furniture design. His work is known for precise detailing, understated luxury, and the fusion of traditional Swedish motifs with modern functionalism. Nordiska Kompaniet, established in 1902, played a pivotal role in promoting progressive design and nurturing the careers of Sweden’s foremost designers during the mid-20th century.

This console table represents a rare and distinguished example of Rosén’s work, perfectly balancing utility, craftsmanship, and sculptural form—hallmarks of mid-century Swedish furniture design.
