Kurt Østervig side table
This rare side table was designed by Kurt Østervig and produced by Jason Møbler in Denmark during the 1950s. The piece exemplifies Østervig’s elegant and functionalist approach to Scandinavian mid-century furniture, marked by clear form, refined details, and the use of high-quality natural materials.
The table features a square teak tabletop framed with an integrated raised lip that curves upward at each end, creating soft, wave-like corners reminiscent of serving trays. This tray-like edge detail serves a functional purpose by preventing items from sliding off, while also providing a sculptural silhouette visible from all angles. The tabletop rests on a solid oak base, a material combination frequently employed by Danish designers to create subtle contrasts in color and grain.
Supporting the frame are four round, tapering legs that are slightly splayed and chamfered, lending the piece visual lightness. A single horizontal oak stretcher reinforces the construction, maintaining clean lines and geometric balance. The warm reddish-brown hue of the teak contrasts gently with the lighter, neutral tone of the oak, enhancing the understated richness of the table’s aesthetic.
Kurt Østervig, originally trained as a shipbuilder, was known for architectural precision, structural clarity, and elegant proportions. His collaboration with Jason Møbler produced furniture that, though less widely known than some contemporaries, is highly regarded for its craftsmanship and quality.
The table carries the original branded manufacturer’s mark on the underside, indicating model number 303. It remains in very good original condition, showing minimal surface wear and well-preserved finishes on both the teak top and oak frame. The dimensions are 55 cm wide, 55 cm deep, and 36.5 cm high, approximately 21.7 inches by 21.7 inches by 14.4 inches high.
