Erik Ole Jørgensen easy chair
This rare easy chair was designed by Erik Ole Jørgensen in 1964 and produced by Georg Jørgensen & Søn in Denmark. It represents mid-century Scandinavian seating design with a robust yet elegant solid rosewood frame paired with original patinated leather cushions, reflecting the craftsmanship and material sensitivity typical of Danish modern furniture.
The frame is crafted from solid rosewood, showcasing a warm reddish-brown tone and expressive grain, especially noticeable on the angled rear legs and horizontal slats of the backrest. The woodwork features clean, angular joints and gently rounded edges, balancing visual stability with tactile comfort. The seat is subtly reclined, contributing to an ergonomic seating posture.
The upholstery consists of thick, down-filled leather cushions in a rich reddish-brown tone. The original leather exhibits signs of wear, including creases, surface marks, and patina developed over time, along with one documented repair. These marks are consistent with age and use, enhancing the chair’s authentic character. The cushioning is divided into distinct zones—a deep seat, two loose armrest cushions, and a tall, tiered backrest supporting both upper and lower back—visually echoing the segmented wooden slats of the frame’s rear.
Erik Ole Jørgensen (1925–2002) was known for his upholstery expertise and sensitive use of materials. Trained initially as a saddler and upholsterer, he later studied furniture design at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts. His work often features generous proportions and a tactile focus, bridging craftsmanship with modernist design principles.
Georg Jørgensen & Søn was a Danish manufacturer recognized for high-quality furniture made in close collaboration with designers during the postwar period, emphasizing solid woods and traditional joinery in line with Danish modernism.
The chair is in good vintage condition with structurally sound joints and an aged yet intact finish. The frame shows minor wear, and the original leather upholstery remains functional and comfortable despite visible age-related marks. The chair measures 71 cm wide, 92 cm deep, and 95 cm high (approximately 28 x 36.2 x 37.4 inches), with a seat height of 40 cm (15.75 inches).
This piece exemplifies Scandinavian mid-century design’s enduring appeal, where form, material, and function are harmoniously integrated.
