Ole Wanscher easy chair
This early production example of the easy chair model 116, also known as the “Senator” was designed by Ole Wanscher and produced by France & Søn in Denmark. Introduced in 1951, the design embodies Wanscher’s modernist approach through classical balance, refined craftsmanship, and an emphasis on high-quality materials. This particular chair is crafted from solid rosewood and retains its original black leather upholstery.
The frame features softly sculpted transitions and precision-fitted joints, reflecting the meticulous manufacturing standards of France & Søn during the mid-century period. The rosewood exhibits a rich, varied grain with deep reddish-brown and dark streaks, creating a visually dynamic yet harmonious appearance. Slightly tapered and splayed legs contribute to the chair’s sense of lightness despite its solid construction.
The original black leather cushions are button-tufted, well-structured, and fitted on both the seat and backrest. The upholstery shows minor wear consistent with careful use, maintaining suppleness and surface integrity. The rear of the backrest reveals a curved laminated rosewood support, adding a sculptural element that highlights the three-dimensional quality of the design.
Ole Wanscher (1903–1985), a student of Kaare Klint, was a leading figure in Danish modern furniture design, known for blending classical proportions with modernist sensibilities. France & Søn was a prominent Danish manufacturer renowned for high-quality serial production, particularly in teak and rosewood.
The chair is in very good original condition. It measures 68 cm wide, 75 cm deep, and 80 cm high (approximately 26.8 by 29.5 by 31.5 inches), with a seat height of 43 cm (16.9 inches). This piece exemplifies Scandinavian mid-century elegance and craftsmanship, balancing lightness, function, and material richness.
