Information

This rare pair of easy chairs, model Colonial, was designed by Ole Wanscher and produced by P. Jeppesen Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. The frames are constructed from mahogany, known for its fine grain and durability, finished in a deep, warm tone that highlights the wood’s natural beauty. The seats feature handwoven cane, a traditional technique that provides both visual lightness and structural strength. The original cushions are upholstered in blue fabric, complementing the dark wood and reinforcing the Scandinavian design ethos.

Ole Wanscher, a prominent figure in Danish modern design, drew heavy influence from 18th-century English and colonial furniture traditions, evident in the refined proportions and elegant details of these chairs. His work is renowned for precision craftsmanship and a timeless, understated aesthetic. P. Jeppesen Møbelfabrik, responsible for the production, was known for its high-quality woodworking and commitment to traditional techniques, making this model a notable example of mid-century Scandinavian craftsmanship.

The design reflects Wanscher’s adaptation of historical furniture to modern needs, featuring delicate yet robust construction, gracefully curved armrests, and a slightly reclined backrest for ergonomic comfort. The Colonial chair remains one of his most iconic and enduring designs, blending classical influences with the functional minimalism typical of Danish modernism.

Both chairs are in good condition, showing a patina consistent with their age. The woven cane is intact, the mahogany frames exhibit minor wear consistent with use, and the original blue fabric upholstery is well-preserved.

The dimensions are 65 cm in width, 70 cm in depth, 84 cm in height, and a seat height of 43 cm (25.6 x 27.6 x 33.1 inches, seat height 16.9 inches).
