Hans Hansen box

This rare decorative box was designed by Hans Hansen and produced in Denmark during the 1950s. The box is rectangular in shape, constructed from solid rosewood, and is characterized by its sleek, minimalist design. The four corners of the box and the front edge of the lid are adorned with sterling silver inlays, creating a refined contrast between the dark, richly grained rosewood and the polished metal. The lid is hinged at the rear, and opens smoothly to reveal a clean, undecorated interior made from rosewood, with the grain continuing across all internal surfaces, showcasing a cohesive and elegant design.

The rosewood is distinguished by its deep reddish-brown tones, interspersed with darker veining that emphasizes its natural beauty. The grain is arranged with care to maintain visual symmetry, and the wood has developed a subtle satin sheen over time. The sterling silver inlays are hand-fitted, serving both a functional purpose as reinforcement and a decorative one, adding visual interest to the piece. The underside of the box is marked with a small, round Hans Hansen maker’s mark, which confirms its origin and authenticity.

Hans Hansen (1884–1940) was a Danish silversmith who founded his studio in Kolding in 1906. Initially known for his sterling silver work, Hansen’s firm expanded to incorporate mixed-material designs, blending wood and silver into objects that adhered to the minimalist Scandinavian aesthetic. This decorative box exemplifies the firm’s commitment to quality craftsmanship and its ability to integrate silver details into utilitarian, everyday objects, creating functional art.

The box is in very good condition, with only light surface wear and minor marks on both the wood and silver, consistent with its age and use.
