Ole Wanscher desk
This rare freestanding desk was designed by Ole Wanscher and crafted by master cabinetmaker A.J. Iversen in Denmark during the 1950s. The desk is constructed from rosewood, featuring a combination of solid and veneered surfaces that showcase the wood’s deeply expressive and symmetrical grain patterns. The rich reddish-brown tone is enhanced by a polished satin-sheen finish, which accentuates the natural variations and depth inherent to high-quality rosewood.
The desk’s rectangular top is defined by sharp, clean lines and is supported by four straight, squared legs that reinforce its architectural clarity. The front facade comprises three shallow central drawers, flanked on either side by two stacks of three deeper drawers each. All drawers are fitted with finely shaped brass handles, designed in a stylized traditional form that introduces a classical element to the otherwise modernist framework. The rear side of the desk is fully finished and includes two drop-down compartments, open shelving, and additional drawers, enabling functional use from both sides and allowing for flexible placement as a freestanding piece.
The dimensions measure 166.5 cm in width, 85 cm in depth, and 73.5 cm in height (approximately 65.6 inches wide, 33.5 inches deep, and 28.9 inches high). The symmetrical layout and dual-access design reflect meticulous craftsmanship and thoughtful planning, characteristic of the Danish Golden Age of furniture making.
Ole Wanscher, a prominent figure in Danish modern design, was trained under Kaare Klint and is renowned for his integration of classical design elements with modernist principles. His collaboration with A.J. Iversen, one of Denmark’s most respected cabinetmakers, resulted in furniture that balances precision joinery, noble materials, and harmonious proportions. This desk exemplifies their shared dedication to artisanal quality and functional elegance.
The desk is in excellent vintage condition, displaying minimal wear while retaining original brass fittings and surface finishes. It stands as a prime example of high-end Danish cabinetry from the 1950s, combining sculptural refinement with practical executive functionality.
