Information

This rare and large ceiling lamp, designed by Mogens Hammer and Henning Moldenhawer and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark, stands as an outstanding example of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design. The collaboration between Hammer and Moldenhawer, coupled with Louis Poulsen’s renowned production quality, results in a piece that is both architecturally striking and atmospherically refined.

The lamp features a commanding circular brass frame measuring 100 cm in diameter. The brass has developed a warm, rich patina over time, highlighting the material’s age and quality while softening its original brightness into a deep, golden tone. The surface shows subtle signs of oxidation and tonal variation, enhancing its historical character and providing visual depth.

Arranged evenly around the circumference are six light sources, each topped with newly added pleated linen shades. The conical shades are crisp and finely crafted, offering a soft contrast to the aged brass. Their pleated construction allows for gentle diffusion of light, casting a warm and evenly distributed glow that avoids harsh shadows. The upward orientation of the arms and the spacing of the shades create an elegant radial composition, reminiscent of classical chandeliers but with distinctly modernist restraint.

The proportions and form of the lamp allow it to function as a central statement piece, suitable for large spaces such as dining rooms, entry halls, or salons. At 121 cm in overall height, it maintains a grand vertical presence without appearing heavy or imposing.

Condition-wise, the lamp is in excellent vintage shape. The brass frame is structurally intact with a consistent patina, and the new linen shades are pristine, chosen to respect and complement the original design intent. The contrast between the darkened brass and the clean white shades adds visual sophistication and emphasizes the sculptural symmetry of the piece.

Mogens Hammer and Henning Moldenhawer were part of a generation of Danish designers who worked closely with architects and craftsmen to create lighting that harmonized with modern interiors. Their collaboration with Louis Poulsen—Denmark’s most respected lighting manufacturer—ensured that this piece was executed to the highest standards in both materials and detailing.
