Poul Kjærholm chandelier
This rare chandelier, model PK-101, designed by Poul Kjærholm and produced in 1956 by E. Kold Christensen in Denmark, is an exceptional example of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design, embodying Kjærholm’s rigorous architectural sensibility and his distinctive integration of industrial materials into refined, minimal compositions.
Crafted entirely from matte polished steel, the chandelier features a vertical central spine from which a constellation of horizontal arms radiates outward. These arms are arranged at varying heights and lengths, forming a complex yet balanced spatial structure that reflects Kjærholm’s masterful sense of proportion and rhythm. Each arm is terminated by a cylindrical socket, positioned with precision to maintain an even visual and physical equilibrium throughout the fixture. The composition avoids decorative excess, relying instead on material, geometry, and meticulous engineering to achieve its sculptural elegance.
Measuring 35 cm in diameter and extending 115 cm in height (approximately 13.8 × 45.3 inches), the chandelier has a vertical emphasis that makes it ideal for tall spaces such as stairwells, vaulted rooms, or central atriums. Despite its size, the open construction and use of slender elements give the piece a visual lightness that allows it to float within the architectural space.
The matte steel surface exhibits a subtle and desirable patina developed over time, with minor traces of wear that testify to the chandelier’s age and authenticity. This natural oxidation does not detract from its overall refinement but rather enhances its character, aligning with the material honesty that defined Kjærholm’s work.
Poul Kjærholm (1929–1980) was one of the most influential figures in Danish modern design, known for his dedication to precision, structural clarity, and the exploration of industrial materials, particularly steel. Unlike many of his contemporaries who favored wood, Kjærholm consistently worked in steel, elevating it to the status of a noble material within the Scandinavian design tradition. His designs are widely celebrated for their elegant restraint and have been collected by major museums and design institutions worldwide.
Produced by E. Kold Christensen, Kjærholm’s exclusive manufacturer during his lifetime, the PK-101 chandelier is one of the rare lighting designs within his limited oeuvre.
