Poul Kjærholm dining chairs
This is a set of eight dining chairs, model PK-1, designed by Poul Kjærholm and produced by E. Kold Christensen in Denmark during the 1950s. The chairs feature a minimalistic and functional design characteristic of Scandinavian mid-century modernism. The frame is made of chromed steel, giving the structure a sleek, industrial appearance while ensuring durability. The seat and backrest are crafted from woven rattan, which provides a natural contrast to the metallic frame. This combination of materials is a hallmark of Kjærholm’s approach, where he sought to balance the warmth of organic textures with the precision of industrial components.
Poul Kjærholm was a Danish designer known for his restrained aesthetic and use of steel in furniture design. He trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts, which influenced his ability to blend craftsmanship with modern materials. His work is widely regarded for its purity of form and refined structural details. E. Kold Christensen, the original producer of these chairs, was instrumental in bringing many of Kjærholm’s designs to life. The collaboration between the designer and the manufacturer resulted in some of the most iconic pieces of Danish modern furniture. These chairs belong to the Scandinavian mid-century modern style, which emphasizes clean lines, functional forms, and a harmonious blend of materials. The woven rattan not only adds a natural element but also provides comfort and flexibility.
The dimensions of each chair are 48.5 cm in width, 43 cm in depth, and 71 cm in height (19.1 x 16.9 x 28 inches), with a seat height of 41.5 cm (16.3 inches). The set remains in good vintage condition, with natural patina to the woven rattan, reflecting its age and authenticity.
