Information

This rare set of eight dining chairs was designed by Henry Rosengren Hansen and produced by Brande Møbelindustri in Denmark during the 1960s. Executed in solid rosewood with original black leather upholstery, the chairs exemplify the sculptural precision and material integrity of Danish mid-century furniture making. Their form and construction reflect Hansen’s affinity for understated elegance, ergonomic refinement, and expert joinery.

Each chair features a gently curved backrest composed of a single piece of solid rosewood, slightly canted for lumbar support and integrated seamlessly into the vertical rear posts. These posts taper gracefully and rise slightly above the backrest line in a restrained yet expressive gesture. The seat frame is formed with softly rounded edges and joined with visible, sculpted transitions at each leg. Underneath, two stretcher rails reinforce the structure, one near the front legs and another spanning the sides for added rigidity and balance.

The seat is upholstered in black leather, showing a well-developed natural patina that highlights the quality of the original material. The surface bears minor wear consistent with age, with soft creasing and a subtle luster from decades of use. The combination of the dark rosewood and black leather creates a visually coherent ensemble, both warm and modern in tone.

Each chair measures 47 cm in width, 49 cm in depth, and 75.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 43 cm. These dimensions are equivalent to approximately 18.5 x 19.3 x 29.7 inches, with a seat height of 16.9 inches. The proportions are compact yet comfortable, with well-calculated angles that support both visual harmony and physical ease when seated.

Henry Rosengren Hansen was a Danish designer active in the postwar era, noted for his collaborations with manufacturers such as Brande Møbelindustri. His work is distinguished by its clarity of form and reliance on precise detailing rather than overt embellishment. Brande Møbelindustri, founded in the mid-20th century, became known for producing high-quality furniture using fine materials and exacting construction methods, and often worked with leading designers of the period.

The chairs remain in good vintage condition. The rosewood frames display minor signs of age, including small dents and variations in patina, while the joints remain tight and stable. The leather seats, though used, are structurally intact and visually consistent, further enhancing the ensemble’s character and authenticity.

This set was conceived as a complete group and is ideally suited for use with the matching rosewood dining table by Rosengren Hansen, also produced by Brande Møbelindustri. Together, the table and chairs represent a cohesive example of Danish modernism—crafted with integrity, balanced in form, and rich in material presence.
