Axel Larsson bedside tables
This is a rare pair of freestanding bedside tables designed by Axel Larsson and produced by Svenska Möbelfabrikerna Bodafors in Sweden during the 1940s. These tables are crafted from elm, with lacquered drawer fronts and brass hardware, following the same stylistic and material language seen in Larsson’s coordinating bureau. Together, they create a cohesive ensemble of early Scandinavian modern bedroom furniture.
Each table features a compact, rectangular form with softly rounded corners, and a single drawer front finished in a deep teal lacquer. The casing is elevated on four slender, tapering legs, which are connected by an integrated stretcher support beneath the drawer. This architectural element not only enhances stability but also adds an elegant layer of detail. The handles are formed from patinated brass, with a softly curved silhouette that complements the rounded lines of the frame.
These tables exemplify Axel Larsson’s transitional design approach—blending the ornamental restraint of the Swedish Grace style with the emerging functionality and minimalism of mid-century modernism. Larsson’s work at Bodafors was noted for its meticulous approach to proportions, consistent use of quality materials, and refined joinery techniques. These bedside tables embody that sensibility, with their precise construction, material honesty, and warm palette.
The lacquered drawer fronts create a striking contrast with the golden tone of the polished elm casing, lending a two-tone visual effect that is both period-specific and timeless. The rounded corners and clean proportions make the tables versatile, suitable for both classic and modern interior contexts. Despite their compact size, the tables offer practical storage and a solid visual presence, with proportions ideal for placement beside low or medium-height beds.
The tables are in very good vintage condition, with light wear and surface patina consistent with age. The finish and structural integrity have been well-preserved, and the lacquer retains its rich depth of color.
Each table measures 45.5 cm in width, 31.5 cm in depth, and 55 cm in height (approximately 17.9 x 12.4 x 21.7 inches).
