Svend Aage Madsen desk
This rare freestanding desk was designed by Svend Aage Madsen and produced by K. Knudsen & Søn in Denmark during the 1950s. Crafted from solid and veneered teak, the desk features brass structural elements, exemplifying the refined detailing and organic modernism characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian furniture design.
The compact, asymmetrical design includes an elevated rear gallery with a single raised drawer box on the left and a built-in brass paper rack on the right. The gallery, sculpted from solid teak with smoothly rounded corners, functions both as a visual frame and a practical containment for items on the writing surface. The top surface is gently recessed, bordered by curved side extensions that define the desk’s distinctive silhouette.
Beneath the writing surface, the front features a central locking drawer with a flush-mounted design. The brass key escutcheon and subtle drawer integration highlight careful joinery and minimalist ornamentation. The base consists of four outward-angled legs connected by diagonally crossing brass tension rods and a lower teak stretcher, combining structural stability with visual lightness.
Svend Aage Madsen was a prominent figure in the Danish modern movement, known for his sensitivity to form, ergonomics, and timber grain. His desks are celebrated for their sculptural qualities and fine craftsmanship. K. Knudsen & Søn, a smaller Danish workshop, was recognized for collaborations with talented designers and delivering high-quality, complex woodworking.
The teak used exhibits a rich reddish hue with a fine, consistent grain, showcasing natural variations that enhance the piece’s organic aesthetic. The brass components have developed a soft patina consistent with age and use.
The desk measures 90 cm in width, 70 cm in depth, and 81 cm in total height, with a working surface height of 71 cm—approximately 35.4 x 27.6 x 31.9 inches, with a desktop height of 28 inches.
