Information

This wall-mounted cabinet was produced by Lotos Werkkunst in Germany during the 1960s. Crafted from solid and veneered maple, it exhibits a warm golden tone with vertically oriented grain across the drop-down front panel. The cabinet’s silhouette is trapezoidal in profile, tapering subtly from the bottom to the top, which introduces a dynamic yet compact form. The handle is positioned along the upper edge of the door and crafted from a contrasting dark wood with a gently curved, sculptural shape, adding a refined touch to the piece’s otherwise straightforward geometry.

The interior features a functional and thoughtfully arranged layout, including a mirrored back panel and two floating glass shelves supported by polished metal brackets. Below, a base compartment contains two small drawers with circular finger pulls. The drop-down door is equipped with dual side-mounted metal stays for support and is finished on the inside with a red laminate or vinyl surface, which serves as a practical writing area or occasional workspace, suitable also for use as a drinks bar. The cabinet’s construction demonstrates careful joinery and a blend of machine and hand-finishing techniques typical of mid-century German craftsmanship.

Although the designer remains unknown, the cabinet carries the original manufacturer’s label from Lotos Werkkunst, a postwar German producer active in the mid-20th century. Lotos Werkkunst was known for creating small-scale furniture and decorative arts pieces that balanced functional innovation with modernist aesthetics. This cabinet reflects influences from the Bauhaus movement combined with the optimistic, streamlined design language of postwar Europe, emphasizing modularity, compactness, and clarity of form.

The piece is a representative example of mid-century modern German design with a distinctive architectural presence in a miniature scale. Its versatile function allows it to serve as a wall-mounted mini-bar, a small secretary desk, or a display cabinet. The dimensions measure 60 centimeters in width, 25 centimeters in depth, and 50.5 centimeters in height (approximately 23.6 by 9.8 by 19.9 inches). The cabinet is in very good condition, showing only minor wear to the exterior finish and interior surfaces consistent with careful use. The red work surface remains intact, and the mirror shows minimal signs of aging.
