Otto Schulz easy chairs
This very rare pair of easy chairs, designed by Otto Schulz and produced in the 1940s by Boet in Sweden, stands as a refined example of Swedish Art Deco design transitioning into early modernism. Schulz, known for his ability to blend bold form with comfort and craftsmanship, imbued these chairs with sculptural presence and a strong sense of materiality, making them both functional and visually captivating.
The chairs feature a distinctive rounded, tub-like silhouette, with an enveloping half-circle backrest that flows seamlessly into curved armrests. This continuous form creates an inviting, cocooning effect, offering both visual harmony and physical comfort. The bold yet softened geometry reflects the influence of the Art Deco movement, tempered by the warm, tactile sensibilities of Scandinavian design.
Newly reupholstered in a luxurious bouclé fabric, the chairs have been given a contemporary update that respects the integrity of the original design. The upholstery features a duo-tone palette in warm neutrals—soft and textured on the interior surfaces, with a denser woven fabric applied to the exterior. This contrast emphasizes the chairs’ sculptural curvature while enhancing durability and visual interest.
Supporting the upholstered body are four short, dark-stained wooden legs that provide a grounding counterpoint to the plush upper form. Their simplicity and finish subtly reinforce the understated elegance of the piece without detracting from the overall composition.
Otto Schulz, a German-born designer active in Gothenburg, Sweden, was a central figure in Swedish decorative arts during the early 20th century. Through his work with Boet, he championed a uniquely Swedish interpretation of luxury—favoring craftsmanship, material depth, and lasting form over fleeting trends. These chairs, with their carefully resolved design and balanced proportions, are a testament to that philosophy.
Each chair measures 85 cm in width, 85 cm in depth, and 71 cm in height, with a seat height of 40 cm. In imperial units, this equates to approximately 33.5 inches wide, 33.5 inches deep, 28 inches high, and 15.7 inches in seat height. Their generous proportions and sculptural elegance make them ideal as statement pieces in both vintage-inspired and contemporary interiors.
