Bertil Vallien (born 1938) is a Swedish artist, glass designer, and ceramicist, best known for his long and influential work with Boda, Åfors, and Kosta Boda. He is particularly associated with experimental glass, including his pioneering work with sand-cast glass, but his practice has also included ceramics, sculpture, and metalwork. Vallien’s work often combines utility with symbolic and imaginative expression, moving between functional design, decorative objects, and unique artistic pieces.

Biography

Bertil Vallien was born in Stockholm in 1938 and grew up in Sollentuna, north of the city. He studied at Konstfack in Stockholm, where he trained in ceramics and graduated in 1961. After receiving scholarships, he continued his studies in the United States at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles before returning to Sweden in 1963.

After his return, Vallien began working at Boda glassworks, where he became part of the creative environment surrounding Swedish glass during the 1960s. He worked with glass, ceramics, and design, and was later connected with Åfors glassworks and Kosta Boda. Over time, he became one of Sweden’s most internationally recognized glass artists, known for works that explore light, transparency, symbolism, and the expressive possibilities of the material.

Although primarily associated with glass, Vallien also designed objects in iron for Boda Smide, a workshop affiliated with the Boda glassworks. His metalwork from this period includes fire screens, fire tools, and decorative objects, often combining practical function with playful or symbolically charged ornamentation. These works reflect the broader craft culture around Boda, where glass and iron were both used to create handmade objects with strong material character.

Vallien’s later glass work is especially known for its sand-cast sculptures, frequently featuring boats, heads, figures, and archetypal forms. These pieces gave his work a distinctive language, where ancient symbols and modern glassmaking techniques meet in objects that feel both mysterious and contemporary. His work ranges from serially produced design to unique sculptures and public commissions.
