Bertil Vallien candelabra
This chandelier, designed by Bertil Vallien and produced by Boda Smide in Sweden during the 1980s, is an example of Scandinavian design that merges artisanal metalwork with refined glass elements. The piece functions both as a chandelier and as a hanging candelabra, combining sculptural qualities with functional purpose.
The construction consists of a circular frame in bronze-colored iron with a hammered surface that reflects traditional Nordic craftsmanship. Suspended from this ring are six candle holders, each fitted with a blown glass vessel. The glass is shaped with bulbous lower forms and flared upper rims, giving a play of light and transparency against the darker metal structure. The iron suspension rods rise in a triangular arrangement, connecting to a central link chain, which provides both structural support and a visual balance to the composition.
Bertil Vallien (b. 1938) is one of Sweden’s most prominent glass artists and designers, internationally recognized for his experimental work with glass at Boda Glasbruk. While most widely celebrated for his sand-cast glass sculptures and vessels, Vallien also worked with lighting and decorative design for Boda Smide, a division of the Boda group that specialized in wrought iron and combined material objects. His designs from the 1980s reflect a period of collaboration between glass and metal, bringing a strong tactile quality to functional objects.
This chandelier embodies the Scandinavian tradition of integrating natural materials and artisanal craft with modern design principles. The contrast between the warm bronze-colored iron and the clear glass creates a restrained yet striking aesthetic, characteristic of Vallien’s ability to balance materiality and form.
The chandelier is in good vintage condition, with light signs of wear consistent with age. The metal shows a natural patina, and the glass remains intact and clear.
