Björn Trägårdh (1908–1998) was a Swedish interior architect, designer, painter, draughtsman, and graphic artist. He became associated with Svenskt Tenn at a young age and contributed to the company’s early development through furniture, pewter objects, lighting, and exhibition work. His design language often reflected the restrained elegance of Swedish Grace, with a preference for clear forms, muted colours, and carefully considered decorative detail.

Biography

Björn Trägårdh was born in Uppsala in 1908. He studied at the Technical School and Berghs School of Painting before training as an interior architect at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm between 1926 and 1929. Shortly thereafter, he became connected with Svenskt Tenn, where he worked as an artistic advisor and designer during the company’s formative years.

Together with the architect Uno Åhrén, Trägårdh contributed several furniture designs to Svenskt Tenn’s first furniture department. He also worked closely with the company’s founder, Estrid Ericson, curating exhibitions and designing objects in pewter, lighting, and upholstered furniture. His early work for Svenskt Tenn helped shape the company’s identity during the 1930s, at a time when Swedish design was moving between classicism, modernism, and refined craftsmanship.

In 1937, Trägårdh moved to England to continue his studies, and in 1939 he was a student at Académie Julian in Paris. When the Second World War broke out, he moved to Normandy, where he began producing artistic buttons made from dried straw. This work later developed into a larger craft-based production, supplying fashion houses such as Balenciaga, Worth, and Schiaparelli.

Alongside his design work, Trägårdh maintained an active career as an artist. He exhibited paintings, sketches, and drawings in France and Sweden, including at Institut Tessin in Paris and galleries in Stockholm. His work is represented in collections such as Nationalmuseum, Moderna Museet, Tours Museum, and Pau Museum.
