Björn Trägårdh table mirror
This rare table mirror, designed by Björn Trägårdh and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden in 1930, is executed in pewter with a characteristic textured surface. The rectangular frame is composed of four broad pewter sections, each treated to create a uniform, finely patterned finish with subtle tonal variation. The material displays the soft sheen typical of aged pewter, with visible hand-worked details and natural patina developed over time. The mirror is supported by a simple and functional brass rear stand, attached to a secondary plate that secures the glass within the frame.
The design reflects Trägårdh’s restrained modernist approach during his collaboration with Svenskt Tenn, where he often employed clean geometric forms and a limited material palette. The proportions are balanced and symmetrical, with the frame presenting a linear composition that enhances the clarity of the reflective surface. The craftsmanship corresponds to Svenskt Tenn’s early production, characterized by careful metalwork and a focus on tactile qualities.
The mirror is in good vintage condition with signs of usage and patina, including minor surface marks and age-related oxidation to the pewter, as well as slight wear to the rear metal components. These characteristics are consistent with its age and indicate original, unrestored surfaces.
The dimensions are 40.5 cm in width, 22 cm in depth including the stand, and 38 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 15.9 x 8.7 x 15 inches.
This mirror carries notable provenance. It belonged to Emy and Gunnar Lundberg and to Ragnhild Lundberg, whose connections to Josef Frank and Estrid Ericson played a significant role in Svenskt Tenn’s early history. Around 1910, Emy Lundberg studied in Vienna, where she met Anna and Josef Frank. Through them she gained access to the city’s artistic circles. After her return to Sweden in 1912, her commissioned dining room furniture by Josef Frank became an early example of his work seen in Stockholm, later influencing Estrid Ericson’s interest in Frank’s designs. Ragnhild Lundberg, working first at Grand Hôtel and later as owner of Hotel Plaza, actively supported Svenskt Tenn by directing important clients to the company. Her close friendship with Estrid Ericson further strengthened the professional and artistic ties that shaped Svenskt Tenn during the first half of the 20th century.
