Biography
Relatively little biographical information has been widely published about Gustav Aliki, and his work is mainly documented through contemporary furniture pieces, exhibitions, and design references. He is described as a cabinetmaker working between Sweden and Denmark, with a practice focused on wood, craft, and furniture construction.
Aliki’s furniture is characterized by careful attention to material, structure, and handmade detail. Rather than concealing the process of making, his pieces often allow the joints, proportions, and rhythm of the wood to become part of the design. This gives his work a direct connection to Scandinavian cabinetmaking traditions while maintaining a contemporary expression.
Among his known works is the Elnur cabinet, designed and handcrafted in 2021. The piece combines Oregon pine, birch, and oak, with parts treated through ammonia smoking to create a darker contrast. Its geometric patterning and material variation reflect Aliki’s interest in structure, surface, and the expressive potential of wood.
Aliki has also created the Brut cabinet in pine and the Jagge cabinet in beech and smoked oak, both of which continue his exploration of solid wood, exposed construction, and strong geometric form. In collaboration with Lea Lacroix, he designed the Gillving sofa/bench, a piece that combines traditional woodworking references with a contemporary furniture language.
