Johnny Mattsson

Johnny Mattsson (1906–1970) was a Swedish sculptor and woodcraft artist associated with the development of modern Swedish craft during the mid-20th century. Based in Gävle, he became known for his expressive wood carvings created from reclaimed timber, where the natural qualities of the material played a central role in shaping the final form. His work reflects a deeply intuitive approach to craftsmanship, combining traditional techniques with increasingly abstract and sculptural expression.

Biography

Johnny Mattsson trained in traditional woodcraft and developed his skills through practical work from an early age, establishing a strong foundation in handcraft and material knowledge. He later founded his own workshop in Gävle, where he produced both functional objects and sculptural works in wood. Over time, his practice shifted toward more artistic and experimental forms, moving beyond utility into a distinctly personal sculptural language.

Much of Mattsson’s material was sourced from reclaimed timber taken from demolished historic buildings, often centuries-old pine, which he valued for its character and history. His work frequently explored organic and animal-inspired forms, particularly birds and maritime motifs, reflecting his close relationship to nature and coastal culture. Among his most recognized subjects is the stylized goose, a recurring form that became closely associated with his artistic identity.
